Hakodate Ranked Top Tourist Site

The city in Hokkaido tops survey for the second time

The port city of Hakodate in Hokkaido stands out as Japan's most attractive tourist destination, according to a private think-tank's survey.

Brand Research Institute, a think-tank based in Tokyo, conducted a survey among 29,046 respondees, and the result was that municipalities among Hokkaido rank at the first few positions, with Hakodate at the top. Sapporo came in second, while Otaru and Furano also made the top 10. Prefecture-wise, Hokkaido took the top spot for the seventh consecutive time.

The survey, now in its 10th year running, sees people evaluating a total of 77 criteria that contributes to the overall tourist appeal of a particular destination.

The published results of the survey were also deemed timely, following the recent announcement of the new JR Hokkaido Bullet Train that will commence operations on March 26th 2016, and runs up to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station in Hakodate, connecting through an undersea tunnel.
