If you're traveling to Naoshima from mainland Honshu, you'll need to take the ferry from Uno, about an hour on the train from Okayama. The ferry leaves roughly once an hour, takes twenty minutes to reach Miyanoura port, and costs ¥290 one way. It's a memorably scenic journey, as you'll pass scores of islands, large and small, forested and rocky, so you can just sit and enjoy the view as you go.

Ready to sail from Uno Port
Farewell mainland! We're on our way.
On the way to Naoshima we pass scores of forested islets
There are plenty of other boats flitting around between the islands and the mainland
There are benches on deck so you can sit and enjoy the view
Some of the islands are bigger than others, and have inviting-looking beaches
Some islets are forested, some more rugged
Looking back towards the mainland as we arrive at Miyanoura on Naoshima
The art begins at Miyanoura port with this big red Yayoi Kusama pumpkin
