Tateyama's Snow Walls

Stroll through Tateyama's snow valley in spring

By Christina Nunotani, Toyama, June 2012

Visit Toyama's snow corridor of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, near Murodo Terminal. It is a place where you can feel as if you have truly gone to another place. We can surround ourselves with walls of snow, breathe the crisp mountain air, and enjoy a walk down the snow valley. The snow walls near Murodo are open for walking each spring. This year the walkway officially closed June 10th, but you can pass through other areas with snow throughout June. I went up there May 12th.

A friend said they went to Shoumyo Falls today (June 17th). Shoumyo is the highest waterfall in Japan, and it is also part of the Tateyama- Kurobe Alpine Route. Since there was so much snow this year, it is a great time to see the waterfall. The snow is rapidly melting, but there is still some snow for you to enjoy around Murodo. Each year the chance to see the snow depends on the amount of snow fall for that year, as well as the weather.
