Tokyo is one of the most cultural cities in the world and Japan as a whole has let go of very few traditions. Experiencing things such as calligraphy are a must for those visiting but finding somewhere to participate in such activities can be a little difficult if you don't know where to look.

Located in the heart of Tokyo’s financial district, Chiyoda, Marunouchi Café SEEK is a cultural hub for foreigners that offer the chance to experience many traditions for free. Conveniently located above a Tourist Information Centre, the building was opened in 2012 by the Mitsubishi Estate.

Entering the tourist information centre on the first floor you can make further plans for your stay in Japan if needed but if not then just head to the staircase at the back of the office. Upon reaching the first floor you will be pleasantly greeted and this is where the cultural exchange begins. The café is located in a spacious room lined with a large bookshelf and places to sit. Despite the name, Marunouchi Café SEEK is not actually a café though free green tea is available if you’d like a glass. A member of staff will ask you what you’d like to try first and there is a lot on offer. I started by trying on a Kimono first and was ecstatic when I got to try Mifune Toshiro’s famous crossed arm pose from Yojimbo. If you don’t mind you can have your picture taken using an instant film camera and pinned to a map of the world. You can sign the photograph with a personal message so the centre can commemorate your visit. What you’d like to try first is entirely your choice and the options also include Origami, calligraphy, Kanji practice and relaxing with a book amongst others. With a huge array of tourist literature as well as informational books on Japanese history and traditions available, sitting down and relaxing is encouraged. I was even told the centre is open to those who are wondering the area and would like to rest somewhere comfortable. In this case I’d suggest you also participate in the available activities. They were so interesting it would be hard not to.

With all these activities the centre provides it’d be impossible to leave without learning something new and considering it is all for free is incredible. I left knowing three new Kanji, which will no doubt help me in the future. If you are in the Tokyo Station area then you should make a visit though coming specifically to see Marunouchi Café SEEK is something I highly recommend.
