Sendai Airport, this relatively new, beautiful airport with a curvy-shaped modern terminal building is the main airport of the Tohoku region. Although it was damaged and flooded badly by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, because of an immediate and efficient rescue endeavor first by the United States Air Force, then later by additional US and Japanese military units, the airport was able to miraculously reopen just one month after the disaster, on April 13, 2011. This rescue mission was called 'Operation Tomodachi (friend)'. The access from the airport to JR Sendai station is an easy 30-minute ride. Since the terminal building is directly connected to the airport train station, you just have to follow the sign and a few minutes later you'll be standing at the platform of the train station. A ticket to JR Sendai station is 630 yen.

Hi Justin, thanks for the comment. When I go to Sendai I usually stay with my parents in the suburbs, so this was the first time I ever stayed in a hotel in the city or used JR train and everything was new to me, including the 'famous' stained glass! I found Sendai city fascinating, I'll explore more next time I visit there!

Thanks for sharing, Takako-san. It is true that getting to downtown Sendai is very easy from the airport. Since the airport is about a 30 minute drive from downtown even groups of four people will find it more economical to take the direct train instead of an expensive Japanese taxi. The stained glass inside Sendai Station is a popular meeting point. If you say meet me at the stained glass, everyone in Sendai knows what you are talking about! Another popular meeting spot is in front of the Disney Store on Hirosedori Avenue.
