Sunday morning and coffee go together like Sunday afternoon and Hawaiian-fusion food, so with that in mind, Sunday Coffee Stand, and the attached Hole Hole Hawaiian restaurant are a great place to celebrate Sunday.

This easy to find shop on the main road from Shibuya Station comprises the Sunday Coffee Stand on the first floor, and the restaurant seating on the second, third and fourth floors.

Sunday Coffee Stand is nothing more than a small coffee shop, but unlike many coffee shops in Japan, it specializes in freshly ground Kona espresso coffee and has a small menu of the basic, essential coffees. There is a counter in one corner, and a few small tables with bar stools, but once the seats are full you’ll have to take your coffee to go.

We stopped in after spotting the food display for Hole Hole and had coffee at Sunday Coffee Stand while we waited for the restaurant to open for lunch. Sipping coffees at a table near the door, we could watch the people strolling by on one of Shibuya’s busiest streets. The coffee is good, hot and strong, and it worked wonders on my Sunday morning brain.

When the restaurant opened for lunch at 11, we headed up the narrow, curved stairs to the second floor, where the décor is retro trendy with Hawaiian prints on the wall, and the couches are comfy. The windows were open to the lovely weather outside and the atmosphere was appropriately island-like.

The menu was pretty simple, with some very appealing options that caught our attention. I opted for the karaage teishoku (fried chicken set lunch), and my friend had the hamburger steak. They were both excellent, and exactly what we felt like eating for a Sunday lunch. Other tempting options included the volcano nachos and the pizza.

I was well satisfied when I’d finished my meal, but wished for a second stomach when I saw the dessert menu, which is stuffed with waffles and pancakes with a variety of delicious, sweet toppings.

Sunday Coffee Stand is open daily for coffee, and Hole Hole does lunch and dinner every day, with a range of food and drink courses available.
