The Hida Kamioka Hatsu Kompira Yoi Festival is a rare winter night festival held annually in Gifu Prefecture. Combining more than 400 years of local tradition with lively modern additions, the festival offers a unique experience in Japan's snowy Hida region. It is held to pray for family safety and prosperous business, attracting both locals and visitors to celebrate the community's heritage.
The highlight of the festival is a colorful evening procession through the town. Participants carry Konpira talismans while singing traditional Edo Kiyari songs. The procession is led by the Kamioka Edo Kiyari Preservation Society and Hida Kamioka Tekomai dancers. Dozens of floats, elaborately decorated portable shrines, and groups in costumes (including anime characters and zombies!) parade through the streets toward Tounji Temple, home of the Konpira Hall. The procession symbolizes local unity, with classmates, friends, and community members coming together to practice, build floats, and celebrate.
Daytime events are also part of the festival. A bazaar offers local foods, while a Daruma memorial service honors fulfilled wishes. Visitors can also enjoy bingo tournaments and professional wrestling performances. Free local Hida sake is served at various locations, adding to the festive atmosphere.
