When planning a trip, there's one factor that often matters just as much as famous sights or great food, and that's how a place makes you feel. A welcoming atmosphere can shape your entire experience, and for many travelers, friendly locals and warm hospitality can make the difference between a good trip and a truly unforgettable one.
That's why it's no great surprise that nearly half of global travelers say welcoming destinations play a major role in deciding where to go. Drawing on more than 370 million verified reviews, Booking.com recently released its list of the world's most welcoming cities for 2026 as part of its Traveler Review Awards. Among the destinations recognized for outstanding hospitality was Takayama, a historic town tucked away in Japan's mountainous Hida region.
The rankings were based on the proportion of local accommodation partners receiving Traveler Review Awards, highlighting places where visitors consistently experience excellent service and genuine warmth. In Takayama's case, its strong showing reflects not only quality lodging but also the town's reputation for preserving tradition and offering top-tier hospitality.
Often described as a place where Japan's Edo-period atmosphere still thrives, Takayama charms visitors with its beautifully preserved streets, especially in the Sanmachi Suji district, where wooden merchant houses, artisanal shops, and traditional sake breweries line narrow lanes. The morning markets along the Miyagawa River and opportunities to sample local specialties such as Hida beef and hoba miso add to the experience.
Beyond the town center, cultural sites like Hida Folk Village and the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go offer deeper insight into Japan's rural heritage, giving travelers a sense of connection to the region's history and way of life.
