Hokkaido's winter doesn't get much more lively than at the Iwamizawa Heavy Snow Festival, a long-running celebration that turns the city's famous snowfall into a full-scale winter playground. Held near Iwamizawa Station at Ekimae Civic Square Park and the Akarenga Event Hall, the festival is a highlight of the local calendar, inviting visitors to enjoy snow, food, and high-energy competition in the heart of the city.
At the center of the festival is Human Bamba, a dramatic snow sport unique to Iwamizawa. Teams of six, made up of one rider and five “horsemen,” race across the snow while pulling a massive 350-kilogram sled. The power, speed, and teamwork involved make it one of the most exciting sights of the festival, often compared to winter horse racing on snow. A children's version called Little Human Bamba gives younger participants their own chance to join the action.
There is plenty to enjoy beyond the races. A towering snow slide stretches six meters high with an 18-meter slope, while snow play areas and snowmobile rides let visitors fully immerse themselves in Iwamizawa's winter landscape. Throughout the venue, a bustling food stall village adds warmth and energy, with food trucks and local vendors serving everything from hearty snacks to creative seasonal dishes.
One of the festival's most loved traditions is the free serving of Iwamizawa's pheasant hotpot, a comforting local specialty that draws crowds every year. Live music, dance performances, and family-friendly activities round out the experience, making the Iwamizawa Heavy Snow Festival an enjoyable way to celebrate winter in northern Japan.
