Niigata, the New Lagoon. It’s reputed to have the best tasting rice and some of the best sake in Japan, and is known as a great place to snowboard and ski (I’ll vouch for that), but if that’s all you know about Niigata, my friend, you are sadly under-informed.
In addition to all those mountains and snow, Niigata has about 240km of coastline on the Sea of Japan not including the coastlines of Sado or Awashima Islands, so when you think of Niigata please, think of the beach!
Two of Japan’s top 100 scenic beaches are in Niigata. White sand, clear blue-green water (with clarity of up to 10m in some places), sea cliffs, sea arches, rock outcroppings and other amazing geography await. And as it’s the west coast every beach is a sunset beach. Niigata is also home to Takada Castle Park, one of Japan’s top 100 sakura sites, numerous onsen (hot springs), hiking, and other amazing places to enjoy the great outdoors. So stop waiting and come claim your share of adventure!
