Every time I visited cities in Japan, I always visited the castle as their landmark. I missed Himeji, as it was underconstruction. I've visited Osakajo, Nagoya Castle, Kumamoto Castle, Matsumoto Castle, Hiroshima Castle, Takeda Castle, and Nijo Castle.

Shuri-jo in Naha is interesting, a bit different from others.

Kumamoto and Himeji are the two most impressive, but I also like Marugame and Kakegawa, because of the views they have and the walls and fortifications around them.

Only Sumoto Castle in Avajishima, and there was nothing much left to see. But a rather nice view http://sumoto-castle.net/

I've been to Osaka Castle, Iwakuni Castle, and Matsumoto Castle. Each has their own unique historical and cultural significance. If you are in any of the areas I would recommend stopping by them.
