Which city in Hokkaido is more exciting: Sapporo or Hakodate?

Asked by Justin Velgus · 4 years ago

I am considering escaping to cooler Hokkaido during the hot Japanese summer. I went to Sapporo once a few years ago but only to see the snow festival. I heard Hakodate has some interesting history, which I am a big fan. But I don't know much about these places and intend to spend a week or two just in one city to get to know it really well. Any feedback is appreciated!

In my personal opinion, I believe that Hakodate is the better choice. It's hard to decide about these kind of things, but I'm a big fan of the history based in Japan. :) I hope you decide and post pictures when you travel! Have fun!

Since you are wanting to escape the heat and like history, why not go to a beer museum in Sapporo. http://en.japantravel.com/view/sapporo-beer-museum-and-garden They have some great craft beer places in the city too! http://en.japantravel.com/view/beer-bar-north-island

I only plan to visit Hokkaido, but my grandfather liked Hakodate and I saw a lot of Japanese-style photos (with lanterns, temples etc) there, so I will go there at first. It's got a rep for one of the best nightviews in the world and it's got a great seafood market.
