Quiet onsen required with good hiking around

Asked by Igor Zemtchenko · 5 years ago

Hi community,

I am heading to Japan in March and looking for recommendations to stay in some quiet area with onsen and good hiking opportunities, if there is nearby small village or just supermarket even better. Some local transport or owner gives lift will do.

- not a large hotel group, 10-30 rooms

- sauna and cold bath inside, open air hot bath rotenburo

- room has balcony ideally

- any part of Japan in March (preferably Honshu)

  • Igor Zemtchenko: Thanks a lot. I will check them. I know there are plenty of choices, but I already have my fave places and looking for something similar in different areas. (Reply)

Amanohashidate is a great place to go, with scenic views and either a separate or combined ryokan/ onsen, like http://en.japantravel.com/kyoto/amanohashidate-onsen/3967

Nearby is Nariaiji which is a great place for a hike http://en.japantravel.com/kyoto/amanohashidate-temple-nariaiji/24013

It may be hard to find a supermarket, but there are convenience stores and the like.

Other good places could include Akita's Nyuto onsen or Kumamoto's Kurokawa Onsen http://en.japantravel.com/kumamoto/a-stroll-through-kurokawa-onsen/25684

If you are looking for onsen + mountain, for me the easy answer is Hakone or Nikko.
Hakone is great for the view on mouth Fuji, famous for onsen, and there is many hiking spot, but as it's a volcanic active site (look for Owakudani) so some path can be closed because of toxic gas (there is warning signs if it's dangerous) : http://en.japantravel.com/kanagawa/hiking-in-hakone-valley/10381
Nikko might sound as an unusual choice, yes, there is the part of Nikko with the temples, but there is also the part up the mountain (a bus is going up the iroha-zaka hill) you will find nice onsen, and hicking places in Nikko  http://en.japantravel.com/tochigi/oku-nikko-yumoto-onsen/18513 http://en.japantravel.com/tochigi/nikko-s-senjo-ga-hara-plateau/17268

There might be some research required to find the hicking routes and the righ onsen for you, but those are two regions I enjoyed that match the onsen/hicking. You can share your favorites.

  • Igor Zemtchenko: Thanks very much to all. I have been in these areas, but will look up again. (Reply)
