Why do Japanese people call weak coffee "American Coffee?"

It might come from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caff%C3%A8_Americano - Cafe Americano is adding some water to an espresso, which makes the coffee substantially weaker. I'm not an expert or Japanese person, though.
