Rent a car in Aomori, Akita and Iwate?

Asked by Jillene Ho · 2 months ago

Want to visit amori, akita and iwate in Oct . Wonder if it is easier to rent a car to go to places for the autumn colours. Also can we rent from akita and return the car at iwate etc. Will be coming from n back Tokyo. I was told it is easier to start from akita. Or is it better to just charter taxi per day.... Thank you

Renting a car is an option worth considering if you plan to explore rural Japan where public transportation can be both inconvenient and infrequent. A rental car can also be an economical alternative when traveling in groups or can make traveling with a lot of luggage easier. On the other hand, a car is usually unnecessary or even burdensome for exploring Japan's big cities, where it is not recommended. Traffic in large cities tends to be heavy, orientation difficult, and parking inconvenient and expensive. Public transportation, such as trains, subways, buses and taxis are generally a better choice in metropolitan areas.

Onto your follow up question, some car rental services has in their usage guide the option where you can pick up a car at one rental location and return it to another (subject to car availability and locations)

I've rented cars in various parts of Japan, and haven't encountered issues in picking up in one location then dropping off in another. There may be an additional fee to do so, since they've usually got to take the car back to the original depot/pick up location, but we've often just found it more convenient to do that.

Taxis are pretty expensive in Japan compared to other parts of the world that I've traveled in. I definitely think for cost-effectiveness that car rental is the way to go.
