Luggage on the Shinkansen

Asked by Edmund Zuber · 3 weeks ago

We will be in a round the world trip in spring 2020 and carry quite some luggage.

our transportation system from Kyoto to Tokyo will be the Shinkansen. How do I transport two suitcases and two backpacks on that trip? Is it possible to take them on the train? Do you recommend to purchase an extra seat? Did read a lot about limited space.

Thanks for your support

Hi. Thank you for your interest in visiting Japan. If you're keen to take with you your luggage at the shinkansen, it would be advisable to buy a JR Pass (Green Pass) as this equivalent to a first class for trains in Japan. Green Pass entitles you ride on a Green Car on all shinkansens/ fast trains and has bigger space and leg room which can accommodate your luggages. We can also recommend our JT Zend services where we can transfer luggages from one hotel to another. Thank you.

  • Edmund Zuber: Hi Caleb, thanks for your very supportive advice. I will check your JT Zend service immediately. Regards Edmund (Reply)

Hi Edmund,

As Caleb said if you want to bring with you large luggage, check out the Green Pass. This pass allows you to access to spacious areas on all Shinkansen bullet trains. It is also the right choice for the busy months in Japan. So, if you are traveling in the summertime between June and September, I would recommend the Green Pass instead of the regular Japan Rail Pass.

  • Edmund Zuber: Hi Jack, thank you very much for your support. We definitely will go for the Green Pass even when travelling in early April. (Reply)
