Where is the best spot to see the Gion Matsuri parade from?

Asked by Mandy Bartok · 2 years ago

I know that there are reserved seats near Kyoto City Hall but where else along the parade route would be the best spot to get some good photos of all the floats?

I took photos from behind the reserved seats on Oike Dori near Shiyakusho-mae Station (with a zoom lens), then I moved to the corner of Oike and Kawaramachi. I was pretty happy with a lot of my shots. You can see some of them here http://en.japantravel.com/photos/gion-matsuri-procession

Kawaramachi in Kyoto is the best spot for Gion Matsuri. I haven't seen in other cities though.

I went to Gion Matsuri some years ago. This year's main event is practiced on 17th July.

Next site is Japanese, but it's map is parade route. The crossing of Hankyu Kawaramachi station is easy position at 9:40AM.

I remember standing on a street corner, peering as the floats turned.  However, maybe you should ask the gentleman who took the photos for this article. http://en.japantravel.com/photos/gion-matsuri-kyoto-part-3
