Omihachiman is a great place for a day trip from Kyoto. Take the bus, walk or hire a bike and cycle from Omihachiman JR Station to the beautiful canal area. This canal was once a castle moat, and it connects with Lake Biwa, making it an ideal place for merchants to set up shop because the could use the canal and lake to transport their goods. Today the merchants are gone, but there are paths beside the canal, tourist boats to ride in, and there is a Kawara Museum (Japanese roof tiles including the gorgeously ornate end tiles one sees decorating temples and shrines.) And when you are ready for refreshments, there are two of the best cafes I've ever been to!

Nice photos! I sure enjoyed walking along this canal in Omi-Hachiman this past May. There was a film crew making some movie scenes on the canal by the bridge the day we visited. We also chatted with the man selling rice along the canal that you mentioned. It's a small world sometimes! Also nearby is a shrine, a smaller complex than the usual tourist-visited shrines, but very quaint and beautiful. They happened to have an azalea bonsai display going on when we visited. What gorgeous bonsai art. Perhaps you visited this shrine or the bakery across the street that has the best walnut scones. What a wonderful little town to visit while in that area!
I'm glad you liked these pictures, Keiko. I hope you can visit there soon! I'm afraid I don't know about the canal rides, Yui, I admired the boats but I didn't take a ride, and I couldn't find a sign for them anywhere!

The canal look very well maintained. How long is the canal boat ride?
