Each spring, one of Tokyo's most anticipated culinary events returns to celebrate the artistry of traditional Japanese sweets. The National Famous Confectionery Exhibition takes place at the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, bringing together numerous respected wagashi makers from across Japan.
First launched in 1950, the exhibition has long served as a showcase for established confectioners, many of them family-run businesses with multiple generations of history. The event was created to preserve and promote wagashi culture, highlighting regional specialties and time-honored techniques. For travelers, it offers a rare opportunity to sample sweets from all corners of the country without leaving Tokyo.
Each year introduces a fresh theme to reimagine tradition through contemporary creativity. For its 80th edition in 2026, the spotlight turns to dinosaurs in the first-ever "Dinosaur Sweets Exhibition." Artisans have crafted adorable yet meticulously detailed creations using classic techniques, from nerikiri shaped into prehistoric creatures to yokan designed to resemble fossil layers. Renowned confectioners such as Toraya are participating with limited-edition pieces created specifically for the event.
Beyond the themed sweets, visitors can explore a Dorayaki Collection featuring 21 brands and a Sakuramochi Collection showcasing 14 variations, offering a chance to compare regional interpretations of beloved classics.
