The Japanese are renowned at blending the best of foreign traditions in their cuisine. Just think of sweet adzuki red bean buns. So, as I sink my fork into the sponge like tender texture of this pancake, I wonder, so what will pancakes become? This little cafe upstairs gives the simplest answer: Happy! Bright, full of colours and smiles are its characteristics. From the friendly young staff to the food, everything here expresses this idea that pancake is something to enjoy with a happy heart. The chefs here are constantly reinventing our perception of what pancakes can be. I tried their creamy croque monsieur pancake, which is a French-Japanese fusion dish. Freshly cut shavings of cheese and ham are sandwiched between three layers of pancakes. These spongy, creamy pancakes are well balanced with shredded cabbage and potato salad. So this is not just a dessert bar, and being smoke free, ideal for everyone. Pancake Days café is located in Harajuku Bell Pier, just three minutes walk from Meiji-Jingumae Subway Station Exit 4. Head South East, cross the Meiji Dori intersection, and then turn right on the second block down the side street. From JR Harajuku it is a five minute walk.
