The small picturesque harbor of Ohara in Chiba’s Isumi City is a fascinating place to spend a morning. A food market is held on the first and third Sundays of every month, with local fishermen bringing in such ocean delicacies as red snapper, abalone and Japanese lobsters. Visitors can also purchase ingredients for an on-site BBQ meal and the 140-year-old Kidoizumi sake shop is more than happy to supply the beverages.
The harbor is a 20-minute walk from Ohara Station, which is itself a 70-minute train ride from Tokyo. Free shuttles from the train station to the harbor are provided on market days.
