Mount Nikkō-Shirane is a shield volcano located in the Nikkō National Park, Gunma prefecture. Nikko National Park actually encompasses Gunma, Tochigi, Fukushima and Niigata, with Nikkō-Shirane located just inside Gunma. With an elevation of 2,578m, the peak of Nikkō-Shirane is actually the highest point in the Kanto region. It also one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan (Hyakumeizan, a famous guide book published in 1964).
