Molly Malone's in Hiroshima

You don't need to be Irish

There are a couple of other "Irish" bars in Hiroshima, but Molly Malone's is still, by far, the closest we have to the real thing. Over the years, the management and staff have filled this fourth floor space, in the heart of downtown Hiroshima, with a genuine pub atmosphere to go along with the imported pub decor.

Whether you catch the resident authentic Irish barman on duty or not, the management make a point of employing the friendliest of staff who always provide a warm welcome and good service. On busy nights it's great to see such a nice mix of nationalities at the bar and around the tables, and if you are looking to meet some friendly Japanese locals it is not a bad place to start (especially if you don't speak much of the lingo).

Molly's has a large menu with lots of hearty pub fare, desserts and a good range of imported and domestic beers on tap. It's also a popular place to watch international sports (English Premier League and international soccer and rugby matches in particular), and the place can get very busy when a there is a big game involving Japan's "Blue Samurai" soccer team.

Guinness, Kilkenny, Bass Pale Ale, Heineken and Carlsberg, are ¥900 a pint (560ml) and ¥500 or ¥550 a half (280ml), Sapporo is ¥800 a pint and ¥500 for a 390ml mug, Hoegaarden is ¥800 and Heineken Extra Cold and Yebisu Creamy Top are ¥700. And, with lots of bottled beers like Newcastle Brown Ale, Coopers and VB, Corona, Budvar, Grolsch, Becks, Stella Artois, Budweiser, and Magners cider from Ireland (¥500-¥800), you can pretty much drink your way around the world.

The regular menu has everything from bar snacks and light bites such as potato wedges, spring rolls and calamari, soups and pastas, to filling pub favorites like fish and chips, meat and chicken dishes, an all day Irish breakfast and a killer Sunday roast. Seasonal specials are also available, as well as some great desserts.

Their Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners provide a very welcome taste of home and plenty of cheer for many international residents, and they are more than happy to accommodate vegetarians if you let them know in advance. Molly's also has occasional live Irish music events, and their St Patrick's Day, Halloween and December anniversary parties are always packed and a lot of fun.

Molly Malone's is smoke-free until 9pm (there is a smoking area in the area between the elevator and the entrance).

Regular deals:

  • Happy Hour: Monday - Saturday 17:00-19:00 ¥200 off pints of draught beer and cocktails.
  • Tuesday Ladies Night (Half price cocktails and a free dessert when a main course is ordered).
  • Thursday Dice Night (Opt to roll the dice for any drink up to the value of Y900 and pay what you roll. i.e. 2 one's is Y200 and so on).
