Summer sunset on Miyajima

Warm summer evening with a perfect view

The descending sun illuminates Itsukushima Shrine

The sinking sun turns the red of Itsukushima to orange

Golden light and long shadows

A deer was wandering on the sand and nibbling at seaweed before the water covered it

When the tide is high enough, a boat can sail between the pillars of the torii

The island is such a beautiful place, in that moment I wanted to stay there forever

If you asked me when and where I saw the most beautiful sunset, I would say it was in the summertime on Miyajima. And I'm lucky enough to have seen it twice! Miyajima is a wonderful place anyway, and is deservedly popular with both local and foreign tourists, but during the photographer's so-called 'golden hour' it truly becomes a magical place. If you can afford it, stay at one of the great Japanese inns on Miyajima, but if not, you'll still have time to take the ferry and train back to your budget accommodation in Hiroshima after the sun has set. Write it on your bucket list!
