When it snows in Kyoto, there are many beautiful places to enjoy the winter scenery, but not all of them are easy to get to. However you can visit Biwako Canal and Honkokuji quite easily, by taking the train to JR Yamashina Station. The canal is only 10 minutes walk from there. Snow transforms the canal into a winter wonderland.

Snow along Biwako Canal
A winter wonderland in Yamashina!

Looking along the canal

Trees beside the canal look like a scene from Narnia

Curlicues formed by snow sliding down the metal rails

Looking along the canal from Honkokuji's red bridge

The red bridge looks dramatic from below

The footprints are quickly filled with freshly fallen snow

The snow weighing down this tree almost looks like weeping cherry blossom

A blanket of snow over the picnic table and benches

This seat would be a chilly resting place today!

Lamplight turns the snowy branches greenish-yellow

View from Yamashina Station, which is the closest access to the canal

Some lovely photos in there, love the red standing out in the first few and also the last picture! Looks like a nice little place :)
Thank you Daniel. It's a lovely place for walking, cycling in every season. I lived nearby, so I often took photos there.

Beautiful photos Cathy! Especially the one of a weeping cherry blossom...that must have looked really amazing in person!
Thank you Jerome! Yes, it was all better in real life.
