On 29 October 2015, Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture launched its first official English website.
As the entire country begins to mobilize to attract its share of overseas visitors with the buildup to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this small fishing town has announced its own bold strategy: to be itself. The tsunami triggered by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake has changed the town considerably. However, its original charms, delicious seafood, breathtaking nature, and friendly people, continue to thrive. This is what the town wants to highlight.
The Minamisanriku website is a wealth of information complimented by wonderful pictures of its natural scenery and an easy-to-navigate design. A traveler can find information about farming, fishing, biking, and nature programs. Suggested themed trips, transportation routes, a map of the area, and even accommodation information in English (with images) is on the website, too. Some of the more unique activities a visitor can enjoy are cycling along the picturesque coastline, soba or tofu making, flower art, and a Preserve the Forest program to “Learn and experience forestry in the heart of the mountains.” After a long day, tourists can relax in one of the many hot spring (onsen) baths found at most of the area's hotels.
