Tengu Kogen
Dana VielmettiTengu Kogen is a beautiful mountain area on the border between Kochi and Ehime known for its beautiful karst rock topography.
Bordering Kochi and Ehime prefectures, the Shikoku Karst Plateau is an impressive testament to nature’s diversity. This scenic area is one of Japan’s top three karsts. The plateau stretches for about 25 km from east to west and hits an elevation of 1500 meters above sea level. The karst offers a vista of Mount Ishizuchi and surrounding mountains in the area.
Visitors to the area can also admire cows out to graze. The idyllic scenery can be admired year-round. In spring, the plateau turns into a lush grassland; summer brings alpine plants, in autumn, view the pampas grass and fall colors; while in winter, the snowy scenery offers something completely new. This is also an ideal spot for stargazing thanks to the high altitude and low light.
Limestone formations jutting from the ground create an unusual vista that can seldom be seen. Wander through the fantastical landscape and make your way to Woodland Therapy Road—one of many trails—where the cypress-chip covered ground makes for a relaxing walk over the karst.
A 110-minute drive from Kochi via the Susaki IC.
