Shiga Prefecture is home to Biwako, Japan's largest freshwater lake and one of the world's oldest lakes. Along with neighboring Gifu, Shiga is one of Japan's few landlocked prefectures.

The historical, social, gastronomical, and cultural focus of life in Shiga is and has been Lake Biwa, the source of fresh water for farmers and millions of people in the Kansai area.

The Tale of Genji, the world's first modern novel was allegedly written by Murasaki Shikibu at Ishiyama-dera in Shiga over 1,000 years ago.

World-class museums, amazing panorama views, historical shrines and temples, Shigaraki-yaki pottery, unforgettable meals, and more await you and your family.

Come and taste all that Shiga has to offer.
