A Shinkansen is not the only train that can be in and of itself an attraction, for there are many local "semi-express" trains with great views as they travel through the countryside. The double-decker Holiday Rapid View Yamanashi is one such train that will take you from Shinjuku to the Yamanashi area. The Azusa and Kaiji trains are certainly viable alternatives, but the Holiday Rapid View Yamanashi is not considered a limited express train, so the fee is almost the same as normal trains!
