Espresso Cafe

Step inside an old cargo train carriage

A tranquil street follows the Mamigasaki River. The trees provide a pleasant shade for a walk on a warm sunny day in Yamagata. A gentle gust of wind brings you an intense smell of good coffee. Nearby two old cargo train cars stands aside the street and a dangling sign says "Espresso" under a white coffee pot drawing. On the street side one of the two carriages opens into a narrow terrace where an old couple sits talking quietly. The charming and relaxed atmosphere and the extravagant "architecture" are what make this place so unique.

The Espresso (エスプレッソ) is a bar located in a residential area of Yamagata city. Entering the only room you will find yourself surrounded by an eclectic collection. Old lamps, musical instruments, books and other things decorate the interior; there is even an embalmed armadillo on the terrace railing.

The drinks are served in small glasses and you can choose among various blends. Sit down inside or at one of the two small tables on the balcony and relax. Deeply breathe; appreciate the aroma of the freshly brewed coffee and savour the rich aftertaste that follows every sip. The perfect coffee break is here.

Getting there

There are different bus routes to reach the location from the main station. Ask at the bus information counter for details and they will help you. The walking distance is about 45 minutes or you can always take a taxi.
