Curry Kitchen Kush Kush is about 20 minutes walk from Machida or Naruse stations on the Yokohama line, in Machida's Kanamori neighborhood on Machida kaido. The small unassuming restaurant is situated on a busy thoroughfare, crowded with car dealerships and discount stores. It's easy to miss. But you'll be glad you didn't if you stop in to sample their mouthwatering array of curries and appetizers.
Though the front of the shop is graceless, with signboards and menus with garish fonts proclaiming their fare, the inside is understatedly pretty, with a few colorful lanterns over the wooden furniture and some bric-a-brac like a team of lucky elephants in a recessed corner. A half dozen tables seat a dozen people, with a counter and bar seats offering a half dozen more seats.
The curry menu runs to over twenty selections. Try the chana masala, a chickpea concoction in a rich tomato-based sauce. The sag paneer is thick and flavorful with chunks of cheese dotting the rich green spinach puree. Other selections include butter chicken, prawn masala, and keema curry. Each dish, starting at around 1000 yen, comes with naan or rice. That's regular naan, but for a surcharge you can upgrade to the garlic naan (so deliciously vampiric!) or the green naan (covered in brilliant emerald spinach and herb paste).
Dinner sets are a good deal as well, with the basic set costing 1150 yen for your choice of curry, plus naan, rice, and salad. A more deluxe set will run you 1650 yen and comes with two types of curry, naan, rice, salad, tandoori chicken, and a tandoori prawn. Kids' sets are 790 yen. Take out bentos are 650 yen and come with naan, rice, chicken tikka, curry, and something called "onion kimchi."
To wash it all down, how about a lassi? I prefer mine plain, but they also have the ubiquitous mango, as well as strawberry and banana. Not in the mood for drinking yogurt? No problem, other soft drinks are on the menu, including chai tea. For those who need a bit of something harder, try the Kingfisher beer, Indian whiskey, or cassis lassi cocktail. More standard beer, wine, and cocktails are also available.
