Latte Graphic in Machida

Aussie café brings southern hemisphere coffee culture

In between running errands like picking up another pair of cheapo sunglasses and filling a prescription in Machida's busy city center, I needed a break and wanted something a little more special and relaxing than the usual Doutor and Tully's fare.

Enter Latte Graphic. Relatively new on the scene, this stylish Aussie-inspired café opened earlier this year to provide respite for weary souls needing a break after a hard afternoon's shopping.

Just a block from Odakyu Machida station on the second floor overlooking a busy shotengai (shopping street), Latte Graphic is a stylish and spacious space serving up pretty coffee drinks and tasty morsels to a hip young chattering crowd. Surf and design magazines line the wall for perusal and surfaces are sleek, polished, and modern. Specials are chalked on huge blackboards on the wall and over the serving bar and iced drinks are delivered in mason jars.

Coffee drinks run about ¥500, and are named with a nod to the shop's Oceanic inspiration: here you can order a flat white, a long black (yes), a short black, etc. Coffee not your thing? How about chamomile tea, a house made chai latte, or cranberry-orange juice? A variety of other tea, juices, and sodas are available as well as a few alcoholic beverages.

Those hankering after breakfast that doesn't include salad and miso soup may be glad to find that Latte Graphic is an excellent brunch spot, serving up eggs benedict (¥780), big brekky with eggs, sausage, toast, bacon, and mushrooms (vegetable-inclined people can sub in more sauteéd veg for meat, ¥980), pancakes with loads of toppings like berries, citrus, banana-walnut, etc. (¥880), berry french toast (¥880), and more. Perfect for taking the edge off the night before.

They've got you covered for dinner too, with dishes like tomato basil margherita pizza (¥1180), steamed mussels in white wine sauce (¥1380), Aussie beef steak and grilled veg (¥1680) and the like.

For the sweet tooth, try the gateau chocolat decorated with whipped cream and a swirl of chocolate syrup (¥580), a slice of lemon poppy seed pound cake (¥250), or just a big house made cookie from the cookie jar (¥150). Some items in the pastry case are available for take out.

So... brunch next week?
