Cute character cafés and themed desserts are practically a pastime in Japan, but this summer in Fukuoka, things are getting especially adorable thanks to the return of the “Aquarium Dessert Buffet - Friends of the Sea” at the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Created in collaboration with Marine World Uminonakamichi, the limited-time event transforms sea creatures into fun sweets and colorful savory dishes inspired by the aquarium’s most popular residents.
Running on weekends and public holidays through late September, the buffet features around 40 all-you-can-eat desserts and light meals themed around dolphins, penguins, garden eels, seals, and more.
Some of the highlights include the “Something Pops Out Melon Shortcake,” (pictured above), decorated to look like garden eels peeking out from the sand, and “Gomataro-kun’s Black Sesame Mousse,” inspired by the aquarium’s seal Gomataro. There is also a banana roll themed around dolphin stars Marron and Haru, plus ocean-colored jelly desserts and marine-inspired sweets designed to be as photogenic as they are tasty.
The savory menu gets just as creative. Guests can try a bright blue butter chicken curry inspired by the sea, paired with bamboo charcoal naan shaped around the aquarium’s pilot whale character Yuki-chan, alongside hummus dips styled after garden eels.
Admission to the buffet is priced at 5300 JPY for adults, 2800 JPY for elementary-aged children, 1500 JPY for pre-schoolers, and free for those aged 0 to 3 years.
