A new waterfront art event is set to transform Kobe's harbor with shimmering bubbles and colorful lights this spring. KOBE BUBBLUMI 2026, Japan's first immersive waterside bubble illumination experience, will take place along the city's waterfront from March 20 to April 19, offering visitors a unique blend of art, light, and seaside scenery.
The free event will unfold around the area near GLION ARENA KOBE and the surrounding TOTTEI district, which opened in 2025 as part of a major redevelopment of the city's port. Organized by the Kobe Waterfront Art Project Executive Committee, the installation celebrates the first anniversary of the area's opening while looking ahead to the launch of a new superyacht marina planned for 2027.
At the heart of the event are large-scale bubble-inspired artworks by Atelier Sisu, a collaborative studio known for its installations at Vivid Sydney. Led by Australian artist Zara Passfield and Peruvian sculptor Renzo B. Larriviere, the studio creates reflective sculptures designed to capture the fleeting beauty of bubbles.
Visitors will encounter two main installations during the event. The first, "Evanescent Droplets," will be displayed at the planned marina site between Shinko Pier No. 1 and No. 2. Floating above the waterfront, the reflective bubble-like forms create an immersive art experience that interacts with the surrounding sea and sky.
Another installation, "Colossal," will appear near the entrance to the TOTTEI area in front of the arena. This towering bubble structure stretches nearly 10 meters wide and is designed to change dramatically between day and night. During daylight hours, the reflective surfaces mirror the harbor and sky, while after sunset the sculpture transforms into a vibrant illuminated display.
The artworks explore themes of transience and impermanence, inspired by the fragile nature of soap bubbles. By highlighting moments that are brief and beautiful, the installation encourages viewers to appreciate small, fleeting experiences.
