One of Niigata’s most beautiful seasonal events, the Fragrant Rose Festival at Echigo Hillside Park, offers visitors the chance to experience thousands of roses in bloom across one of the prefecture's best gardens.
Held annually during rose season, the festival transforms the park’s Nagaoka Fragrant Rose Garden into a sea of color and fragrance, with around 800 rose varieties and 2,400 rose plants blooming throughout the grounds. The garden has earned international recognition from the World Federation of Rose Societies, receiving its Outstanding Garden Award for the quality and beauty of the space.
The festival typically features a packed schedule of rose-themed events, including gardening workshops, seasonal displays, and special programs celebrating the park’s award-winning collection. Limited early morning openings allow guests to enjoy the gardens at their most fragrant, while evening illuminations until 8pm on select dates (May 30th and 31st, and June 6th and 7th for 2026) create a completely different atmosphere after sunset.
Located in Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture, the park has become a popular destination for flower lovers looking to experience Japan’s quieter countryside attractions beyond the major tourist cities. The combination of fresh early summer greenery, mountain scenery, and fragrant roses makes it especially appealing for travelers seeking a slower-paced seasonal experience.
Because the blooming period changes slightly each year depending on the weather, visitors are encouraged to check the latest flowering updates before planning a trip.
