Tokyo's Sumida Ward will come alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Okinawa this May as the Sumida Okinawa Festival takes over Kinshi Park. Designed as a vibrant cultural exchange, the festival brings together the traditions, food, music, and craftsmanship of Okinawa Prefecture and Sumida Ward in one lively urban setting.
Held in the heart of Tokyo, the event is built around the concept of "Discover Another Okinawa in Sumida." Visitors can experience traditional Okinawan performing arts such as Eisa dance and the soulful sounds of the sanshin, alongside Sumida's Wa Odori and powerful Japanese taiko drumming. Many performances are participatory, creating an inclusive atmosphere that welcomes families and first-time visitors alike.
Food is another major highlight. Festival attendees can sample Okinawan specialties including Okinawa soba and Agu pork dishes, while also enjoying favorites from beloved Sumida restaurants. A craft market rounds out the experience, featuring Okinawan Yachimun pottery, Ryukyu glass, handmade accessories, and workshops where both children and adults can try their hand at traditional techniques.
More than a food fair or music event, the festival aims to serve as a cultural crossroads. By bringing together two regions with distinct identities, it fosters regional exchange, supports local industry, and encourages tourism in both directions.
The festival is free to attend.
