Tokyo's Tennozu waterfront is set to host a new cultural event this autumn, as the area stages its first-ever floating opera on the canal itself.
Organized by the Tennozu Canalside Revitalization Association, the three-night Tennozu Water Opera will transform the canal into a dramatic performance space, blending music, contemporary dance, and lighting effects against the backdrop of Tennozu's waterfront scenery. The association works to revitalize the area through cultural tourism and creative events, and hopes the performance will highlight the unique potential of Tennozu's canals as an artistic stage.
At the center of the event is a 60-minute original opera titled "The Little Mermaid." The production is a reinterpretation of Antonín Dvořák's opera Rusalka, which itself draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale. While the original opera is set beside a lakeshore, this new staging relocates the story to the Tennozu Canal, using the real waterway and the open night sky as part of the set. Through carefully designed lighting, the canal will shift between the shimmering world beneath the sea and the glowing skyline of a futuristic city.
Performances will take place nightly from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The venue is located at Canal East along the Tennozu Canal in Shinagawa Ward, with approximately 900 seats planned. Visitors can also watch the performance for free from outside the seating area along the waterfront.
The event will go ahead in light rain but may be cancelled in severe weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain, or typhoons. Additional details about performers and ticket information are expected to be announced at a later date.
