Matsushima is well-known as one of the Three Most Scenic Spots of Japan. Often unmentioned is the fact that it was the first bay in Japan, and one of only about 40 across the globe, to become a member of the "Most Beautiful Bays in the World" organization. Matsushima is magical in every season, though the warmer months of spring and summer encourage a longer stroll to soak in the views. Learn about the Buddhist history surrounding Zuigan-ji Temple or Oshima Island. Or lazily gaze over the bay from the seaside or Shin Tomiyama hillside and you may catch local sailboats cruising the calm waters.
