In a fairly unremarkable looking building on a quiet backstreet of Musashi Koyama is a restaurant which combines elegance, a friendly atmosphere and the most fantastic food and drink. It's low-key facade means that it is easy to pass by it without noticing, but it can rapidly become a favorite destination.

Shomoto (しょう本) serves Japanese food of the highest standard: the tempura is light and fresh; the fish, whether cooked or raw, is delicate in taste; the chicken is delicious and it simply melts in the mouth; and the vegetables are simple but fantastic. The presentation is, of course, beautiful.

One of the restaurant’s great points is that there is tremendous variation in the menu from day to day. The chefs, whose love of food is so obvious when they explain any of the dishes, aim to use seasonal vegetables and fish in order to ensure that the ingredients are of the best-quality. This type of connection with the natural world, with its rejection of year-round, out-of-season produce is unusual and very satisfying.

The wonderful food can be washed down with great drinks. Naturally there is draft beer. There is also, however, a wide selection of sake, at least one of which will suit your taste. Mention has to be made of the beautiful frosted bottles on a bed of ice in which the sake is served.

Shomoto has counter seating, and both Japanese and western style tables. The restaurant is fairly small, accommodating at most 40 people. The décor reflects its Japanese character, with plenty of bamboo used to demarcate the different areas.

Great dining comes at a price, however, and in this case it comes at quite a high price, so be ready to give your credit card a good workout. Without alcohol it would be easy to spend upwards of 3,500 yen per head. The drinks are reasonably priced, but they can still add a lot to the bill.

For a romantic occasion or when there is a need to impress, Shomoto is a place well worth bearing in mind. Before coming, however, especially at the weekend, it is advisable to make a reservation, as it is a very popular place.
