Kurume Water Festival 2026

Honoring the area’s strong connection to water

Venue
Meiji Dori and Rokkakudo Plaza, Kurume
When
August 2nd - August 5th 2026

The Kurume Water Festival is held every year from August 3rd to 5th, and has a history spanning over half a century now. Held in the heart of the city along Meiji Street and at Rokkakudo Plaza, this event honors the area’s strong connection to water, particularly the nearby Chikugo River.

A variety of activities are held during the event dates, including music performances, traditional drumming displays, and the main drawcard—the famous Abacus Dance, where around 10,000 participants fill the streets in synchronized celebration.

If that wasn't enough, the event wraps up with the Chiguko River Fireworks Festival, which is billed as the largest fireworks display in all of Western Japan. Approximately 100,000 fireworks are set to be launched, ensuring a real spectacle in the skies.
