Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden in Spring

Lesser-known Tokyo cherry blossom viewing spot

This area was once ocean, but was reclaimed in the mid-1600's.

In 1678, it became the residence of an official of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tadatomo Okubo.

Over the years, the residence changed hands a number of times.

The Kishu branch of the Tokugawa family lived here, and later it was home to members of the Imperial family.

The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 destroyed all of the buildings and almost all of the trees.

In 1924 the property was given to the City of Tokyo, the garden was restored, and it was opened as a public park.

The pond was originally filled with seawater.

Visitors follow a circular route around the pond.

Cherry trees, which blossom at the end of March and early April, line the banks of the pond.

This grassy area is a popular lunch spot for local office workers.

The garden is a 1-minute walk from the north exit of Hamamatsucho station and a 5-minute walk from Daimon station

Hidden behind Hamamatsucho Station is lovely Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden. Few people visit since it is located very close to the famous, and much larger, Hamarikyu Garden.

During cherry blossom season, it is one of the quietest viewing spots in central Tokyo and is a really nice place for a picnic lunch.
