Spending time in Kamakura on probably the hottest day I have spent in Japan so far was really a nice experience. Nevertheless, my affinity for finding places to cool down did not fail to leave me at this time. I had armed myself with a fan, a cap and sunglasses, but it was the café known as Loncafe which served best in cooling me down in the middle of this warm summer day.

The train ride to Kamakura, which I took on the Enoden train line from Fujisawa, was a very refreshing experience. It was the first time I saw the sea while in Japan, and getting to experience it on a long-running train, which ran through many local areas made that much better. I quickly realized that Kamakura gave off a different vibe than many other places in Japan. It must have been the fact that it was a seaside town, because it made me feel as if everything was fresh, yet very old at the same time.

I was walking down the streets in Kamakura when I found Loncafe. Apparently, this café is most famous for their French toast, which at first I thought would be a bit boring. However, just for French toast there were so many varieties. Most of them include ice cream of some sort, and then you can choose between e.g. berries, nuts and chocolate for the topping options. If you choose to go here, I think it would be a shame not to try out one of these delicious varieties.

To go with the toast, I had a strawberry-flavored ice tea, but there are so many options with drinks, especially if you go beyond the drink set. The drink set, which includes a French toast of your choosing with a drink like coffee or tea, goes for around ¥1100-¥1200. So if you choose a drink that is not included in the drink set, it will be ¥400-¥500 more expensive, but you will have a wide variety of drinks to choose from. Among these are different juices, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

The reason I really liked this café, besides their delicious French toast, was the fact that it really gave me the feeling that I was near the sea. Honestly, if someone came walking by with a surfboard, I would not have been surprised.
