At Shirakoma forest, moss (of almost 500 types) covered trees rise from a forest floor pocked with holes, gawping maws that look as if they belong to a pack of enormous overactive moles. Virgin hemlock and spruce trees line the path to the natural freshwater Shirakoma Pond, which sits at 2100 meters above sea level. A tent camping site borders the water, and huts are also available for rent.
