While spring in Japan is famous for a wave of cherry blossom-inspired treats, it's not just sakura drinks appearing on seasonal menus. This year, Starbucks Coffee Japan is bringing something a little different to the table: beverages inspired by one of the country's most beloved desserts, the classic cream puff.
Launching nationwide from March 13th, the new Cream Puff Frappuccino and Cream Puff Latte aim to capture the sweet, comforting flavors of the pastry in drink form. The limited-time beverages arrive as part of Starbucks Japan's spring theme, "Spring is the season for dreams to bloom." The concept reflects the sense of fresh starts and anticipation that often comes with the season.
The Cream Puff Frappuccino recreates the experience of biting into a custard-filled choux pastry. The blended drink features a milk-based body layered with vanilla-flavored milk caramel sauce for a rich custard-like sweetness. On top sits vanilla bean custard-flavored whipped cream, finished with crunchy pieces designed to mimic the fragrant texture of baked choux pastry. The result is a dessert-like drink with a creamy, mellow sweetness in every sip.
For those who prefer something warm, the Cream Puff Latte offers a similar flavor profile with a coffee twist. The drink combines espresso and milk with vanilla-flavored milk caramel sauce to evoke the taste of custard cream, while the slight bitterness of espresso balances the sweetness. A pastry-inspired crunchy topping adds texture, giving the drink a nostalgic dessert-like finish.
Both drinks are available in tall size only. The Cream Puff Frappuccino is priced at 687 JPY for takeout or 700 JPY in store, while the Cream Puff Latte costs 609 JPY for takeout or 620 JPY in store.
Starbucks is also suggesting several customizations for those looking to experiment. Adding chocolate chips and chocolate sauce to the Frappuccino creates an indulgent flavor reminiscent of an éclair. Switching the latte to blonde espresso and adding an extra shot produces a lighter roast with a more pronounced coffee flavor. Customers can also swap regular milk for almond milk to add a subtle nutty aroma.
