Is there a more typical Japanese snapshot than a red five-storied pagoda and vibrant red autumn leaves? If you think there isn't, you should go to Takahatafudoson Kongo-ji, a temple in Hino, Tokyo. Unfortunately I was there about two weeks too early to see the full glory of the momiji (Japanese maples) in autumn colors, but some trees already had some red leaves. In the second half of November there is also a momiji matsuri (maple festival). Dates differ, but it takes place for almost two weeks each autumn.

Takahatafudoson Kongo-ji has a lot of buildings, most of them framed with Japanese maples

On some days there are small market stalls where you can buy snacks

The maples start turning red in November

The momiji matsuri is in the second half of November, when all the maples have turned into vibrant red

Details of the five-storied pagoda

The pagoda is lit up during night-time hours

Here you can try seaweed tea and soy bean chips, and buy them if you like them!
