700 cherry trees at one of Japan's top sakura sites

Apr 14th

Venue: Senshu Park, Akita When: Apr 14th - Apr 30th 2021

Each year during spring, Akita's Senshu Park is filled with color when over 700 cherry trees begin to bloom. The park was built at the site of the Kubota Castle Ruins, and was named as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom viewing spots back in 1990.

As is the case with all flower festivals, the dates of the event can be subject to change depending on blooming conditions. Full bloom in previous years has been anywhere from April 14th right through until April 30th, so do check the official website for updates closer to your planned visit.

Getting there

Akita's Senshu Park can be accessed in under ten minutes on foot from the JR Akita Station, which is served by the Akita Shinkansen, the Ou Main Line, the Uetsu Main Line and the Oga Line. For those who plan to drive to the venue, there are numerous parking lots in the area.

I'm an expat who has lived abroad for almost a decade, including 7 years in Japan. I've also visited 44 of 47 prefectures and hope to get to the last three someday! I'm particularly fond of exploring off the beaten path destinations, gardens, and tea houses, and have a real interest in Japan's growing vegan scene.
