There's always a perfect time to be on a beach, where you can enjoy the sand, the ocean and the amazing breeze coming from over the water and far away. I suggest to visit Onjuku, which is a sleepy surf town, and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere while watching or even trying out surfing in the ocean. The town has a variety of options for your stay, at a hotel or a room in a local house being rented out to tourists, called minshuku, or even a local surf shop which rents rooms and offers surfing lessons.

Exciting Views of Surfers and Ocean
Wonderful beach near the ancient fishing village Onjuku

Community writer

Surfers are on the beach as early at 8 am on weekends and they try to find the best area for waves and save their spot in the water as it can get quite crowded as the day goes on.

There's many people that prepare for surfing by changing and checking their equipment on the side of the road.

The beach area is populated by a lot of pigeons who like to relax and check for food.

The river has many koi and other types of fish. If you cross the bridge you get to the residential area of the town.

There are two interesting statues: one of a female on a camel and the other one is of a male on a camel.

You can check out the story that ties the camels to Onjuku in a museum building across the bridge from the camel statues.

The beach however is not only great for surfers. Many other people go to the beach just to enjoy the water and the sand, to cheer their surfing friends on and ...

... take a lot of pictures of the surfing crowd of course.

The surfer's gear is usually very colorful, that goes for surfboards as well as their suits.

Some surfers are really good and are able to ride the waves from out into the ocean all the way to the beach.

Since this is an old fishing town, you can also check out different boats and fishing equipment while in the area.

Since the beach is very big and the sand is smooth you can also bring your family to enjoy a quiet and pleasant day by the ocean side.

There's many hotels as well as restaurants in the area as well as a surf shop called Flying Sumo from where you can rent equipment. They also offer surfing lessons.

As usual the town has many vending machines as well as a couple of convenience stores. Next to some individual local ones, there is also a 7-Eleven store nearby Onjuku JR train station.
