Takayama city isn't on the classic list of mandatory tourist spots, but if you find yourself in Gifu prefecture, you should spend a day there! The center of the city is old traditional Japan – sort of a charming "miniature Kyoto". You can ride a rickshaw or try local udon (thick wheat flour noodles) if you want. One of the most famous Shinto festivals in Japan is held in Takayama. That's why you shouldn't miss visiting the shrines as well.
