Overview
Sumida City Ward stands proudly as part of downtown Tokyo, full of the sights, smells and sensibilities of the city's old Edo history. Plenty of museums and local art galleries are to be found here, both traditional and cutting edge. Here is an introduction to some of the museums and galleries of Sumida and how to reach them.
Ai Koko Gallery
Located inside a residential complex, the Ai Koko Gallery is a small contemporary art gallery. Exhibiting cutting edge works of both Japanese and overseas artists, the gallery operates as a private art space endeavouring to create a sense of 'something' for its visitors. A visit during its many exhibitions is by reservation only.
A 6-minute walk from Morishita Station on the Toei Oedo or Shinjuku lines.
Gallery MoMo Ryogoku
With its regular exhibition schedule and gallery space, Gallery MoMo Ryogoku showcases the contemporary works of up and coming Japanese artists. Also dabbling in global art and artists courtesy of international fairs, the gallery's free admission along with its simple, clean design really puts an emphasis on the artists.
A 2-minute walk from Ryogoku Station on the Oedo Line or a 6-minute walk from Ryogoku Station on the JR Sobu Line.
Japanese Sword Museum
A thousand years of traditional Japanese warrior culture is on display at the Japanese Sword Museum. Some of the most exquisitely crafted works of the swordsmith's art, including long and short swords, daggers and spears, feature as part of the museum's regularly changing exhibits. A marvel of Japanese metalworking ride, the JPY1000 admission free is a steal.
A 5-minute walk from Ryogoku Station on the Oedo Line or a 7-minute walk from Ryogoku Station on the JR Sobu Line.
Sumida Hokusai Museum
Arguably the most famous ukiyo-e artist of them all, the Sumida Hokusai is dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai. This stunning contemporary designed gallery of the artist's life and works features four levels of modern technology helping to showcase the life and works of the famous artist. The JPY400 admission is ridiculously easy on the budget.
A 5-minute walk from Ryogoku Station on the Oedo Line or a 9-minute walk from Ryogoku Station on the JR Sobu Line.
And the Sumida Hokusai Museum is an easy walk from there. The building itself is an artwork.
