Kamakura Bamboo Day 2025

A celebration of bamboo for all the senses

Venue
Jochiji Temple, Kita-Kamakura
When
Saturday - Mar 29th 2025

Kamakura’s much-anticipated Bamboo Day event is set to return, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty and versatility of bamboo in a unique, one-day celebration. Taking place at Jochiji Temple in Kita-Kamakura, this year’s event carries the theme "BAMBOO BLOOM," inspired by the rare bamboo flower said to bloom only once every century. The day promises a variety of ways to engage with bamboo through art, craft, and light displays.

During the daytime, guests will be able to explore bamboo art installations, including a special collaboration with Yamaha Motor’s urban development project, which features a creatively decorated mobility vehicle. Hands-on workshops will be available, allowing participants to try their hand at crafting bamboo items like woven lampshades, musical instruments, and chopsticks—each made using locally sourced bamboo from the Kamakura area. Alongside these experiences, a lively market will showcase unique bamboo crafts, household goods, and a selection of food and drink from local vendors.

As evening falls, the temple grounds will transform with illuminated bamboo art installations casting soft, atmospheric light. The evening session will also feature a live performance on the bamboo ocarina, known as the "Bamburina," adding a soothing musical backdrop to the glowing displays. Those attending at night will have the added opportunity to receive a handcrafted "Takehana Light" bamboo lantern, offered in limited quantities.
